Series 17 - Episode 1: Changing knowledge to improve practice

For those of us who are midwives and those on the pathway to becoming midwives, we know that this vocation is never dull, often a challenge and part of this is coping with changing knowledge and practice - ensuring that we keep up with those changes, absorb the new evidence and add to our existing skills and knowledge set.

In this, the first episode of the 17th series of Maternity and Midwifery Hour, we are joined by two midwives who will be highlighting two key areas with us.

Stephanie Michaelides, midwifery & neonatal education consultant will be discussing the first examination of the newborn after birth, which traditionally takes place in the birthing room. What do we as midwives need to concentrate on.. and how has this assessment changed over the years?

And Dr Anna Madeley, Senior midwifery Lecturer, explores how we, as midwives, can improve issues around consent for women by changing the way we position language in maternity care.

Hosted by:

  • Sue Macdonald, Midwifery Expert; Host and Curator, Maternity and Midwifery Festivals/Midwifery Hour, Editor, Mayes Midwifery

Contribution from:

  • Stephanie Michaelides, Midwifery & Neonatal Education Consultant
  • Dr Anna Madeley, Senior Midwifery Lecturer, University of Northampton

Biographies

Stephanie Michaelides

Stephanie’s life-time mission is to make sure we always remember that the health and wellbeing of the baby is as important as that of the mother and she has devoted her career to advancing the care of the neonate in parallel with that of the mother. She is a highly experienced midwifery practitioner and lecturer with an extensive background in developing innovative, award-winning educational programmes in midwifery and neonatal education and clinical practice, embedded in clinical practice. She has wide clinical experience as a midwife and as a neonatal nurse at all levels and in all settings and most recently was senior lecturer at the Middlesex University for 29 years. During this time Stephanie worked as part of the team developing the Newborn and Infant Physical Screening Examination (NIPE) screening programme. Stephanie is visiting lecturer and specialist advisor University of East London and is working as a midwifery education consultant, again, focusing on the neonate.

Stephanie pioneered and led the design development and implementation of the first Examination of the Newborn – later validated as the Neuro-Behavioral Physiological Assessment of the Neonate (NBPAN) (ENB N96) by the Midwife 1994 and the Resuscitation of the Newborn Course for midwives. These programmes were the first to be developed in the UK and were later incorporated into graduate and post graduate certificates in neonatal care with the Advanced Diploma in Neonatal Care.

Stephanie has contributed to many specialist working groups including the UK National Resuscitation Council; the British Association of Paediatric Medicine (BAPM) National Collaborative on quality improvement in perinatal care; NHSE Expert Reference Group Improving the Midwifery Student Experience invitation from the Head of Midwifery Workforce, Training & Education and ATAIN Co-chair of Jaundice Working Group NHSI.

Her clinical experience spans a wide range of settings, with particular strengths in homebirth, care planning, and providing compassionate, individualised care for families.

Known for her ability to foster supportive and engaging learning environments, Anna is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of midwives while upholding the highest standards of evidence-based practice and continuous professional development. Her commitment to the profession is reflected in her drive to promote holistic, culturally sensitive care and to contribute to the continued growth and development of midwifery practice.
