We are pleased to announce the first webinar in the new ‘season’ of our DARNet Dialogues, which focuses on conflicts, crises and complexities linked to researching and responding to domestic abuse.
The Dialogues are free public webinars designed to spark conversations between research and practice, with a focus on equity, social justice and practice- and experience-informed research insights.
October's Dialogue will focus on domestic abuse and LGBTQ+ communities.
The 'public story' of domestic abuse (DA) has historically centred male-perpetrated DA in heterosexual relationships (Donovan & Hester, 2010). While reflecting one common manifestation of abuse, the narrative silence regarding other experiences has further marginalised lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer and/or trans victims and survivors, creating "gaps where people never see themselves or find information about themselves" (Machado, 2020).
This interactive webinar and Q&A centres the specific needs and experiences of LGBTQ+ communities, asking:
- How can we nuance and add to the 'public story' of DA to reflect a range of LGBTQ+ perspectives?
- How can we acknowledge the gendered aspects of DA, without amplifying problematic binaries and notions of the 'ideal victim'?
- How can we counteract harmful social trends that contribute to the marginalisation and silencing of LGBTQ+ victim-survivors?
