Event description

Description

We would like to warmly invite you to the workshop ‘Chaos and Crisis: Can Prison Be Better Than This?’ taking place on Wednesday 17th of January 2018 at the University of Warwick. This is an event co-organised by the Howard League for Penal Reform, Safe Ground, and the Department of Sociology and the Criminal Justice Centre at Warwick. It is supported by an ESRC Impact Acceleration Account fund that seeks to raise public engagement on current issues inside English and Welsh prisons. The workshop is designed to be an interactive, day-long encounter that brings together a range of prison practitioners and employees, former prisoners, criminal justice charities and NGOs, media, researchers, campaigners and others interested in issues of criminal justice. We are very pleased to include an impressive range of panelists, all having substantial experience and knowledge of prisons.

This workshop aims to offer a multi-expert exchange that discusses current problems inside prisons and collectively debates viable ways forward. The morning session will start with some reflections from former prisoners and a keynote address by the HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, Mr. Peter Clarke. The event is then structured around three main panels, each addressing a set of questions around 1) sentencing and public attitudes to prisoners and prisons, 2) issues of diversity in custody, and finally, 3) current issues around staffing and funding, increases in harm, violence and drugs misuse. All sessions will include plenty of opportunities for audience questions and networking.

This is an invitation-only event, and registration is essential, as places are limited. Attendance is free of charge, and includes a warm lunch, refreshments throughout the day, and drinks at the end.

Location and Timing: The workshop will take place at the Radcliffe Conference Centre at the main campus of the University of Warwick, and it starts at 9.30am and finishes with drinks at 5.30pm. Some advice about getting to the University of Warwick can be found here: https://warwick.ac.uk/services/conferences/location/howtofindus/ and an interactive map locating the workshop’s venue (Radcliffe Conference Centre) here: https://warwick.ac.uk/about/visiting/maps/interactive/. The University is most easily accessed via rail (closest train station is Coventry) followed by a short taxi or bus ride to campus. If you come by car, parking is available at the venue.

Registration: Please advise about your availability to attend this workshop by completing the Eventbrite booking form, and if your plans change later on, please let us know so that we can manage numbers.

We hope you’ll join us in this important discussion, and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ana Chamberlen (a.chamberlen@warwick.ac.uk).
