Event description

Description

Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is brought to life by the Chapterhouse Theatre Company in the beautiful grounds of Madingley Hall.

If you would like to refresh your memory or deepen your understanding of the story - why not come a little earlier and enjoy a talk or two with our world class lecturers before the performance. Seats for talks will be allocated on a first come first served basis- please don't hesitate to get in touch if you would like further information.

Dr Jenny Bavidge will present "The wetness of Darcy" from 3.00-3.30pm

The Mr Darcy of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and early screen adaptations of the novel remained bone-dry from first appearance to finale. Recent film and TV versions have, however, depicted him in various degrees of dampness. This short talk will examine the wetness of Darcy from a rigorously academic viewpoint, examining representations of masculinity and the expression of female desire in the costume drama.

Twigs Way will present "Slipping into the Ha-Ha whilst avoiding the Hermitage" from 3.45-4.15pm

This short talk will explore how and why Jane Austen used parks, pleasure grounds and gardens within her novels. Linking different types of garden to different characters, setting pivotal scenes in pivotal landscape locations, Austen drew her material from landscape designs and debates of the period. From the walled in Colonel Brandon to the wilder pastures of Willoughby join us for new insights into avenues, shrubberies, ha-has and hermitages.

We also have a Writing Historical Fiction workshop with novelist and creative writing tutor Elizabeth Speller from 11.00am-1.00pm- this is a separate event with a discount if you are attending the performance.

The show starts at 4.30pm, grounds open from 2.30pm. You are welcome to bring a picnic but food and drink will be available to purchase before and after the performance.

The show must go on so do bring a brolly if there is a chance of rain.

Picnic rugs and small chairs welcome.
