Event Details

Failures in the governance of charities are increasingly making headlines and over the past few years, the Charity Commission has been paying particular attention to charity governance, issuing a raft of new and updated guidance designed to assist charity trustees.

 The latest governance publication is the new Charity Governance Code, launched in July 2017. It has been jointly produced by NCVO, ICSA, the Small Charities Coalition and others and aims to provide a clear set of governance standards which charities and their trustees can aspire to and work toward. The Code has been endorsed by the Charity Commission who has stated that it “has raised the bar in response to the challenges that the sector has faced over the last two years”.

In our latest seminar, Graeme Hughes, an Associate Solicitor in our Charities Team will introduce the new Charity Governance Code, discussing the following aspects:

  • The background and aims of the Code;
  • The Code’s foundation and the seven principles that make up the Code;
  • What charities should be doing to ensure compliance with the new Code.

In addition to this, we will also provide an update on the Charity Commission’s use of its new regulatory power to issue charities and trustees with Official Warnings. As at the date of this invite, the Commission has issued two Official Warnings and we explain the circumstances that led to them being issued, and the lessons that charity trustees can draw.

The seminar will conclude with a question and answer session.
