The Clare Foundation Presents Charity Trustee Training
with Sarasin & Partners
What every charity trustee needs to know about their investment responsibilities in layman’s terms: arming yourself with questions to tackle your advisers with! This training is based on the Foundation Course that we run on behalf of the Charity Finance Group (CFG). In recent years we have trained over 4,000 trustees and finance directors. We will use the recently launched 20th Edition of the Sarasin & Partners Compendium of Investment as the ‘text book’.
15 minutes: Registration with tea/coffee/water
3 Hours: Understanding your investments
Even though the day-to-day management of a charity’s investments is usually delegated, trustees retain the ultimate responsibility and liability. When matching an investment objective and benchmarks to a charity’s wider goals, an understanding of the investment landscape is important. The following topics will be covered:
• A review of the characteristics and returns of the different asset classes in which charities invest
• A history of endowment returns, expected future returns and sustainable spending levels
• What to consider when creating a strategic investment policy
• Implementing your investment policy: appointing (and managing!) a manager
This is designed as an interactive session: questions are welcome as we work through the subject matter. There will be a 10/15-minute leg stretch at an appropriate moment.
To Follow on: Drinks and nibbles, further informal discussions and networking
