Event description
Wondered why your child is studying Charles Dickens this year?

About this Event

That’s because 2020 is the 150th anniversary of the literary geniuses death, so his life and works are being included in many KS2 and KS3 syllabuses during this school year.

So, to give your kids a bit of extra help, Shane Waterman (RHWT’s founder) is running a series of guided tours for parents and children in the half-term break around CHARLES DICKENS ROCHESTER all designed to make learning about the man and his 15 novels, 5 novellas and over 300 short stories a lot easier AND a whole lot more interesting than sitting in a classroom!

The walking tours are age-appropriate and HIGHLY ENTERTAINING, with a quiz as we wander around the Rochester Charles Dickens knew as a child and used frequently in his novels and short stories.

For KENT schools, walks are on Tuesday & Wednesday, 22nd & 23rd Oct.

For SURREY schools, walks are on Tuesday & Wednesday, 29th & 30th Oct.

Pickwick Papers, Great Expectations and The Mystery of Edwin Drood all feature buildings and locations in Rochester, and we will be going into the actual building featured in one of his best known short stories, The Seven Poor Travellers.

At the end of the walk, the winners of the quiz will receive a prize for paying attention!!

Your children will be able to ask as many questions as they like, and Shane will be telling them a few facts and odd coincidences that you won’t find in a text book, and that their teacher is unlikely to know – including the link between CHARLES DICKENS and GAME OF THRONES! You’d never believe it, but there is one!

How long does the walk take? Around 2 hours depending on how many questions your little cherubs ask!

What’s the cost? These walks are offered on a DONATION-ONLY BASIS at the end, and we leave the amount to your discretion and financial position.

What do I need to bring? Firstly, at least ONE child!! They will need a pen/pencil and something to help write on (a clipboard etc) if they want to take part in the quiz as we walk around. Please bring at least a drink for them too.

Can I leave my child with you? NO. We are NOT childminders – you will have to do the walk with your child(ren), and you will be responsible for them at ALL times.

How do I book places? You MUST click the ‘Get Tickets’ link and reserve a ticket via Eventbrite for each person (adult AND child) who is coming along. You can ONLY book up to 4 tickets. If you need more, you MUST contact us at rhwt.uk@gmail.com to make separate arrangements.

IF YOU DO NOT BOOK TICKETS VIA EVENTBRITE YOU MAY NOT BE ALLOWED TO JOIN THE WALK IF FULL NUMBERS HAVE BEEN REACHED. In other words, don’t just click ‘Going’ on Facebook!

If you have any questions about the walk, please contact us at rhwt.uk@gmail.com.
