The Charles Parker Day 2020

Friday 3 April, 10:30 - 17:00

Birmingham City University Parkside Building

5 Cardigan Street, Birmingham B4 7BD

The annual conference celebrating the radio feature – past, present and future; returns to Birmingham where Charles Parker lived and worked, and the city where his extensive audio archive is housed in the Library of Birmingham.

40 years ago Parker, one of Radio’s greatest innovators and pioneers, died in Birmingham after rehearsing a new play with Banner Theatre. This year’s Charles Parker Day will celebrate his life and achievements with some of the people who worked with him and contemporary radio producers, podcasters, musicians and dramatists today who have been influenced by his work. The Charles Parker Day 2020 examines his creative achievements and looks to the future as we announce the five winners of the Charles Parker Prize for the Best Student Radio Feature which will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

Tickets £30 (£20 concessions, £10 students)

Banner Theatre presents 'FREE FOR ALL'

Is the NHS up for auction in a ‘Free For All’ to private health corporations? This 999 call features powerful songs, dynamic music, unique video footage and moving storytelling.

‘Free For All’ pays tribute to a health service still rated the most efficient and successful in the world. Based on the actual words of a wide range of health professionals interviewed by Banner, the show celebrates their passionate dedication to a publicly owned health care system free for all at the point of delivery.

Banner Theatre is a socialist theatre company based in Birmingham, whose founder members included the radical radio producer Charles Parker. Banner Theatre offers stirring insights and sharp commentaries on the salient issues of our times, developing Parker’s legacy of using ‘actuality’ in a theatre context.
