Event description
Chartered and Associate Membership Exam Preparation Course 2020 The Institution of Structural Engineers The Surrey Regional Group

About this Event

The Surrey Regional Group is holding our successful series of evening classes at the University of Surrey for candidates sitting the Chartered and Associate Membership exams.

The course will be of immediate benefit to those sitting the examination in the summer 2020 and to those intending to take the examination in future years.

The course will also be of assistance to candidates taking the AM Examination.

With the exception of the first evening, the course will run in two separate groups, one for bridge engineers and one for building structures engineers.

A local Engineer’s office will be made available to candidate’s wishing to attempt a seven-hour question on a Saturday.

Typical Course Program:

1st Evening: Past-years’ successful candidates will discuss how they prepared for the exam and will explain general preparation techniques.

2nd Evening: Examiners will talk about the marking procedure and discuss solutions for a past question with candidates.

3rd Evening: Section 1 of a past paper will be attempted by groups of candidates with assistance from the course leaders.

4th Evening: A number of details required in past papers will be attempted and discussed with the leader.

5th Evening: The letter to a client and the method statement from past papers will be attempted and discussed with the leader.

6th Evening: Section 1 of a past paper will be attempted by groups of candidates with assistance from the course leader.

7th Evening: A mock two-hour test will be set with a choice of two building structures and one bridge.

The programme for bridge candidates will follow the above with a variety of bridge past papers led by practising Chartered Bridge Engineers.

All course leaders and helpers are experienced practising Structural Engineers drawn from the Surrey Region membership.

The course will run on seven Wednesday evenings from 13th May to 24th June 2020 starting at 18.30 and finishing at 21.00.

You will not need any special equipment but please bring pens, notepaper and a calculator. It will be useful to have your reference files filled in with extracts of any specific design guides, codes, load-span tables, material properties, etc. A pad of graph paper will be useful for sketching.

Booking

The 'course fee' is a donation of £100 to the IStructE Benevolent Fund. If you wish to join our 2020 CM and AM preparation course, please register on Eventbrite using the link on this page not later than 10th of May and also send an email to Jeff Walker.

If more than one candidate is being booked under an individual booking, please confirm to Jeff Walker all attendees’ names and whether they are Building or Bridge Candidates.
