Description

Join us for this mini pilgrimage from the Cathedral to the Old Kent Road as we follow in the footsteps of thousands of pilgrims before us including Chaucer and his characters from his Canterbury Tales.

Departing from the Cathedral we will take a leisurely stroll stopping off at a number of interesting points at London Bridge and Borough High Street, including Talbot Yard where the Tabard Inn stood which was the set off point for many pilgrims, the historic George Inn, St George the Martyr Church and its Dickens connections and Tabard Street where its flats are all named after Kent villages you would visit on the full route.

We then make our way to the Old Kent Road where we will stop at the Thomas a Becket pub, which was then close to St Thomas a Watering at the old edge of London for much need refreshments and the chance to discuss what we have seen and learnt so far.

We then continue to North Peckham and the former Civic Centre where we can view the beautiful murals which depict the history of the Old Kent Road including the pilgrims.

There will be opportunities to have your Pilgrim Passport stamped at the Cathedral, St George the Martyr church and the Thomas a Becket public house.

We will warmly welcome you to join us for Morning Prayer in the Cathedral at 9.00am and Eucharist at 9.15am before a short introduction to the day where you will be introduced to Thomas Becket, St Swithun and the Canterbury route before departing at 10.00am.

This mini Pilgrimage will be led by Marion Marples who is a Southwark Pastoral Auxiliary and was Secretary of the Confraternity of Saint James for more than 20 years and Leigh Hatts, author of the Pilgrim’s Way a guidebook which details the historic pilgrimage route from Winchester and Southwark to Canterbury.

We recommend you bring clothes for all weather and wear sensible shoes. Refreshments at the Thomas a Becket public house are not included in the ticket price.
