Unlock the secrets of Chawton House with a costumed guide. Discover hidden panelling, witches marks and more as you explore the secrets of this Elizabethan manor known to Jane Austen as 'The Great House'.

Chawton House is an Elizabethan Manor House in the village of Chawton, East Hampshire that once belonged to Jane Austen’s brother Edward. Jane lived in a cottage on his estate and would stroll up to 'dawdle away' many an hour in the grand manor and its picturesque gardens.

Today it is a charity housing many treasures including Austen heirlooms, such as the dining table at which Jane would have enjoyed family meals as well as an extensive collection of early women's writings.

On this special costumed tour, visitors will be able to step beyond the 'no entry' signs and explore those bits that the public don't usually get to see. This is a rare chance to discover witches marks, hidden panelling, smoking dens and more.

We have a tearoom that serves a range of cakes, biscuits, light lunches, ice creams and hot and cold drinks. This is based in the fascinating old kitchen within the house so you can see where the cooks worked all those years ago.

There are only ten places available on each tour, so book early to avoid disappointment. Please note there are lots of uneven steps and staircases so please speak to us in advance about accessibility if this might be a problem.
