Checking for Understanding: Every Learner, Every Lesson
Overview
This webinar, hosted by Kate Jones, focuses on how teachers can check for understanding effectively and deliberately, ensuring that evidence of learning is gathered from every student, not just the confident few.
Participants will explore what checking for understanding really means as a core element of formative assessment, and why common classroom routines can create false impressions of learning.
The session offers practical strategies for designing and asking better questions, using techniques such as multiple-choice questions, exit and entrance tickets, cold calling, mini whiteboards, choral response, and structured wait time to make thinking visible.
Teachers will also consider how to build student confidence, avoid poor proxies for learning, and respond in the moment to what students do and do not understand.
There will also be an opportunity for a live Q & A. Attendees will leave with a range of adaptable techniques to support great teaching and improve learning in every lesson.
