CHEEKY LONDON 25 : OPEN LAB WORKSHOP : Albers Squares
In this workshop we will be looking at the work of Josef Albers on Squares and we will be creating our own version of a Square painting inspired by Albers. We will start with some short exercise. The exercises are taken from the book The Interaction of colors of Josef Albers
Exercise 1— Color recollection – visual memory
If I ask you to imagine the color “red,” the color you see and the color I see will be different. Even if I ask you to imagine Coca-Cola red, we won’t see the same color.
Exercise 2— Color reading and contexture
The way we perceive color depends on context. “We almost never (that is, without special devices) see a single color unconnected and unrelated to other colors. Colors present themselves in continuous flux, constantly related to changing neighbors and changing conditions.”
Exercise 3— The relativity of color
A color has many faces and 1 color can be made to appear as 2 different colors. We will look at examples including the study IV-1.
