The Maldives has got wow-making underwater exploration and toes-in-the-sand luxury licked. Powdery white beaches and turquoise lagoons come as standard, and post-long-haul shoulders slide down as soon as you take in the Indian Ocean views on your seaplane transfer. A standout amid the colour pop of atolls below is Velaa, a 20-hectare private hideaway with a name that means ‘turtle island’ after the creatures that go there to nest and hatch. At its Aragu restaurant, chef Gaushan de Silva serves top-notch cooking to rival that found in the world’s foodiest cities. Now he and his team are touching down in London for one night only to bring Maldivian flavours to the super-smart, members-only Mark’s Club in Mayfair, the elegant grown-up sibling of party hotspot Annabel’s. This guest partnership with Mark’s Club head chef Nicolas Laridan is part of an ongoing series of chef residences, with previous names having included Bryn Williams, Raymond Blanc and Michel Roux Jr. At the event, diners can expect dishes such as bluefin tuna with dried ginger, wagyu beef two ways and vanilla and almond crumble with warm strawberries, all matched with wines presented by Velaa’s head sommelier Ibrahim Waheed – as good as a private-island escape in the centre of the city.
