Event description

Description

We're running a series of 3 study days this May and June. You may think you know these places quite well but we guarantee you'll learn a lot more!

Our second visit is to the Chelsea Physic Garden which was founded in 1673 as a training garden for the Society of Apothecaries. It was re founded by Hans Sloane in 1722 and Philip Miller was appointed as Curator. He created a richly stocked botanic garden, enabling exchanges of plants world wide.

The day will start with a classroom based introduction to the Physic Garden at the IHR from 10.30-1.00. We will trace its history, key people and explore some of its current displays of economic, medicinal ,poisonous and historically significant plants. Coffee/tea and light refreshments are available in the IHR Common Room but only after 10.30. The small coffee stall in South Block of Senate House [at the opposite end of the entrance hall to the IHR] is open earlier and you're welcome to bring a drink into the class with you.

After lunch [not provided, so bring a picnic or get something en route] we will travel via Russell Square tube to Sloane Square tube and then take a 15 min walk to the Garden for a tour with Letta. It will go ahead whatever the weather - so come prepared! Please note that transport costs are not included and that you will also need to pay the £6.10 admission price on the day.[Free for Friends of CPG]

The day is being led by Letta Jones who was a volunteer guide at Chelsea for 17 years. There will also be an opportunity to explore the gardens on your own if you wish at the end of the tour.

As usual the group will be small [max size 16] with a lively illustrated lecture, opportunities for discussion and further personal reading & research suggestions if you wish.

We often have a waiting list for places on our courses so if you book a place, but are unable to use it for any reason, then either find a friend who'd like to come [and tell us!] or email us and we will try and resell it if we can. In that's possible then we will be happy to refund your payment less Eventbrite's fees, otherwise we regret we cannot offer a refund. In the unlikely event of a cancellation of a lecture for any reason we will endeavour to arrange a replacement session as soon as possible.
