About the Workshop: Join us for a hands-on day of creative exploration in a small, supportive group (maximum 5 participants).
This workshop introduces a more sustainable approach to photographic image-making through two exciting cameraless techniques: Chemigram and Phytogram.
You’ll explore the background and artistic context of these processes, see inspiring examples by artists, and learn how to make and use plant-based developers—a lower toxic alternative to traditional photographic chemicals. We’ll also reflect on the ideas behind this sustainable approach to photography.
What You’ll Learn:
Chemigram Explore the space between painting and photography. Using light-sensitive paper and everyday materials such as honey, toothpaste and vaseline, you’ll create unique, magical images shaped by chance and observation.
Phytogram Create otherworldly images using the natural chemistry of plants, common household substances, and sunlight.
Plant Developers Discover how to make and use plant-based photographic developers—an less toxic alternative that uses materials such as garden plants and kitchen waste. You'll learn the principles behind this sustainable method and work with two different plant-based developers during the workshop.
What’s Provided: All materials are included, such as photographic paper, chemistry, and seasonal plants. You're welcome to bring your own plants, textured items, or expired photographic paper. Tongs and gloves are provided but please feel free to bring along an apron if you prefer to wear one.
About: I am a London based Japanese artist working with a variety of photographic processes, moving image and installations. The transformative quality of the different photographic processes fascinates me as it allows me to make associations and explore memory and imagination.
