Chester’s Rows – The Long-Standing and The Lost

Chester’s Rows – The Long-Standing and The Lost

By Heritage Chester

Overview

Discover Chester's medieval marvel - the Rows! Paul Hyde's illustrated talk explores our unique 700-year-old galleried shopping streets.

Multi-level shopping malls became common-place in the 20th Century – for example, the Trafford Centre opened in Manchester in 1998 and the Victoria Centre in Nottingham opened in 1972. However, Chester has had two-tiered shopping with covered galleried walkways for hundreds of years!

In this illustrated talk Paul will provide an overview of Chester’s unique Rows. This will include an explanation the key features of these remarkable structures, their age, and how they were once even more extensive than those that remain today. Paul’s talk will seek to celebrate how the Rows continue to help make Chester look and feel so very special.
