Child and youth data in Understanding Society

Who is the course for?

This workshop is designed for new users of the Understanding Society children and youth data, covering information from pregnancy up to age 15. It provides a structured introduction to the available datasets, demonstrating how to prepare and analyse the data for research using Stata. The workshop combines lectures, practical examples, and a self-directed session to strengthen participants’ skills in managing and linking children and youth data within Understanding Society.

The workshop is aimed at researchers, students, and analysts interested in using Understanding Society data on children and young people. Participants should already be familiar with the study’s design and data collection procedures and have a basic working knowledge of Stata.

Attendance is free of charge but if you attend the in-person course you will need to pay for your own travel and accommodation.

• Know about the Understanding Society study design and data collection procedures. If you are new to Understanding Society, this material is covered in the Introduction to Understanding Society course*.
• Have basic knowledge of Stata.

What will I learn?

The workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of Understanding Society’s children and youth data, covering data from pregnancy and early childhood through adolescence. Participants will learn about:

The aims and purpose of the children and youth data
• The information collected for under 10s and youth respondents
• How the information is structured across files and modules
• Practical guidance on preparing and linking data for analysis using Stata
• Examples of published research using the data
• Opportunities for participants to develop and refine their own research questions

The day combines lectures, live demonstrations, and self-directed exercises. Tutors will be available throughout the workshop to provide support and answer questions. Participants will use their own computers for hands-on practice.

Course materials
Participants will be provided with worksheets and syntax files to accompany the self-directed exercises.

Software and technical requirements

Participants should have access to a computer or laptop with Stata Version 13 or higher installed.
