SPEAKER:

Lorraine MacAlister - help! Trainer, National Autistic Society

Lorraine has worked with a variety of children and adults from across the autism spectrum alongside being heavily involved in family support. Working for The National Autistic Society since 2005, Lorraine’s initial role was
to deliver the help! Family Support Programme, a series of post-diagnostic seminars for parents of children with autism delivered across the country on a variety of topics. She has also developed the resource ‘Autism Seminars for Families’ which enables other organisations to deliver seminars themselves for families within their local area.

Lorraine is now part of the NAS Training & Consultancy Team and regularly delivers training on autism, sensory considerations, behaviour, communication and effective strategies for supporting individuals with autism. Lorraine continues to work on developing new training materials for the NAS, including a course on continence difficulties in children with autism and materials for autism courses at Universities of Cumbria and Napier.

Simon Smith

Simon was diagnosed with autism at the age of five. He now delivers presentations about his personal experiences of what it is like having Autism and how it affects his everyday life. Simon’s insights have helped improve local services within Brighton and Hove, as well as benefiting relationships between parents and children. As one local
professional put it: “I learnt more about autism in an hour (from Simon) than 20 years as a teacher”.

In October 2011 Simon was recognised by Dimensions (learning disability support organisation) for promoting the understanding of Autism and he won the 'individuals' category of the Erica Award.
