This one day course will look at ways of increasing levels of child-initiated musical play within the context of working in an early years environment either as an early years practitioner or a visiting musician.
Uniquely, the day’s training will include practical work in a nursery school with children for part of the day, during which participants will be able to try out various approaches – percussion instruments, recording, vocal improvisation, creating sound makers and using props.
There will also be time to discuss and practice the skills needed to work in a free play context, to look at examples of good practice in this area, to examine the links between adult-initiated and child-initiated music making and to reflect in the day’s experiences.
- To expand participants’ awareness of and ability to stimulate child-initiated music making.
- To increase participants’ awareness of the context needing to be created for child-initiated music making to be successful
- To equip participants with a range of strategies to use in their own work context.
- To place music on an equal footing with other child-initiated activities use in an early years setting.
