An opportunity to increase knowledge and confidence when presented with a potential child protection issue.

About this event

In our work with often vulnerable people, we have an ethical duty to work safely with risk, particularly as it relates to children and young people. Considering child protection is one of the most complex, challenging areas of work for therapists and one where practitioners can feel deskilled and unsure of their assessments.

Who is this workshop aimed at?

This course is designed for therapists and other professionals working with children, young people and adults where child protection is a consideration in their practice. It will consider risk from the perspective of practitioners in private practice as well as those working in an agency setting.

We will explore:-

  • The risks that can arise in our work with children, young people and adults
  • The legislative and policy frameworks which inform our understanding of child protection, including the Scottish Government’s updated Statutory Child Protection Guidance 2021
  • Ethical dilemmas which arise in considering child protection
  • How we assess risk and the way our own levels of risk tolerance inform our risk assessment
  • Information sharing and breaching confidentiality
  • Working with statutory child protection services

This course is intended to be practical in nature, giving space to reflect on practice, examine our own values and beliefs and consider the very complex ethical considerations which arise with child protection concerns.
