Child Safeguarding training for Designated Safeguarding Leads

Venue: SCIE , London

Course content

This CPD accredited course will consider the legislation and practice guidance that supports your responsibilities as Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).

It will further develop the training provided by your agency or setting and deepen your knowledge and the analytical skills required for working in partnership with other agencies and professionals involved in early help for children and families and child protection.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the participants will develop an advanced knowledge of child protection and safeguarding and will

  • be able to describe the role and responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead, reflecting the current statutory guidance and the multi-agency practice responses for child safeguarding and specific concerns

  • know what actions to take to ensure the safety and welfare of children and young people with whom their organisation has contact

  • have considered overcoming the blocks to staff reporting concerns and how to address these

  • have explored how to make appropriate decisions about the action to take when informed of a concern and how to manage the risk to children and young people.

  • be clear about the process for managing allegations against a staff or volunteer.

  • be able to identify and apply a ‘best practice’ approach to ensure confidentiality, sharing of information and recording practices

  • develop an awareness of the emotional dimension of safeguarding work and identify a network for personal support

Who should attend?

This course is for Designated and Deputy Safeguarding Leads working with children, or managing professionals working with children, young people. Trainees will be working within the children and family’s workforce such as education, housing, health, charities, sports or leisure sector organisations and will be either new to their DSL role or who want to update and refresh their knowledge and skills.

All participants are expected to have completed an introductory level course in safeguarding and child protection.

Please Note: This course is not designed for experienced safeguarding leads or local authority staff.
