Event description

Description

In the last year, a great deal of attention has fallen on the Windrush generation, and the subject of immigration into Britain. But this issue has a much longer history that goes back to the foundations of the colonial Caribbean. Professor Daniel Livesay will discuss one particular migrant stream from the past: that of mixed-race Jamaicans who arrived in Britain during the Georgian period. Unlike those who traveled aboard the Empire Windrush, these migrants came from wealthy households. Yet, they faced similar challenges of integration and racist backlash. This talk draws from his recently-published book Children of Uncertain Fortune: Mixed-Race Jamaicans in Britain and the Atlantic Family, 1733-1833

The talk will begin at 6:15 for 6:30 start. Please join us for wine and patties afterwards but we will finish at 8:30 sharp.

You can find details of how to get there at http://alanbaxter.co.uk/contact/. The nearest public transport is Farringdon tube and Farringdon mainline stations, both of which have exits onto Cowcross Street.
