Event description

Description

This reception is marks the beginning of a joint programme of work between the BPS and the MHF on areas of common interest and concern.

The reception will take place at 7pm on Wednesday 17th January, in the Churchill Room, Houses of Parliament. We are delighted that Dr Lisa Cameron MP, Mental Health Spokesperson for the SNP and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Psychology, will host and chair the event.

Speakers include:-

  • Adam Galpin - Senior Lecturer in Media Psychology at the University of Salford. Adam’s research focuses on the use of technology, including the use of prosthetic limbs and the development of e-Health tools. He has also provided research and consultancy to the media industries on a range of topics including user-centred design, healthy uses of technology, media use across the lifespan, and has worked with CBeebies on a project focussing on children’s web usability. Adam developed the UK’s first MSc programme in Media Psychology, launched in 2012.

  • Gemma Taylor - Lecturer in Developmental Psychology at the University of Salford. Gemma’s research focuses on understanding the role of screen media on children’s early memory and language development. Gemma is currently investigating children's word learning from touchscreen apps.

  • Victoria Betton - founder and Director of mHabitat - an NHS hosted organisation which supports people-centred digital innovation in health and care. She is a qualified social worker and coach with over twenty years’ experience in local government, third sector and the NHS. Her doctoral research was on the theme of mental health and online social networks. She is an Improvement Fellow at the Y&H Improvement Academy, an RSA fellow and a visiting research fellow at the University of Cumbria.

  • Children and young people talking about their experiences of using digital technology

During the reception, we will bring together parliamentarians, practitioners and policy makers interested in children and young people and the impact of social media and digital technology on their mental health. Discussions will include a briefing from the BPS on children, adolescents and screen use, the latest research on digital innovation in mental health from the MHF and testimony from young people on their use of digital forms of communication.

The recently published Green Paper on Children and Young People's Mental Health highlights the importance of keeping young people safe online and has announced that the Chief Medical Officer is reviewing the impact that technology has on young people’s mental health.

We hope that this evening reception will provide helpful insights into these areas of children and young people's lives, and the work of the BPS and the MHF in this important area of policy development.

We hope that you will be able to attend and look forward to discussing these issues with you.

Please RSVP and address any queries you may have, including any request to send a deputy in your place, to Millie Macdonald, policy officer at the MHF, on 020 7803 1108 or mmacdonald@mentalhealth.org.uk.
