💭 What is World Building?
World building is the magical process of creating the setting and environment for your story — whether it’s a cozy forest village, a space-age metropolis, or a hidden underwater kingdom. In this session, young writers will:
- Learn the fundamentals of world building
- Look at examples from Jo's own books and other famous authors
- Discover how setting shapes character, plot, and tone

- Author Example & Tutor Showcase: See how Jo Rooks builds her own story worlds through words and illustration.
- Building Your Story World: Create the time, place, and feel of your unique tale through fun guided exercises.
- Outlining the Story’s Plot: Use your world as a foundation to sketch out the beginning, middle, and end of your plot.
- Group discussion and focused feedback to help your ideas shine!
About Jo Rooks
Jo is an Author-illustrator from the UK who is has six published picture book titles including her award winning debut ‘A Box of Butterflies’.
Her books have been translated into multiple foreign languages, used in school resources and also produced into a play which was performed to more than 600 children in the Merton Borough of London and at Barnes Literary Festival. Jo has worked with many children’s publishers including Magination Press, Usborne Books, Little Tiger Press, Oxford University Press, Out of the Box Books and York Press. She is a warm and friendly tutor who has a passion for nurturing talent and inspire new authors, illustrators and artists on their own creative journeys.
