Children’s Cycling Skills Session: 11.30am – 12.30pm
* The session will take place in a traffic free area, away from the park and any distractions. It is 1hr long, starting promptly at 11.30am. Please arrive 10min early.
Children must be able to pedal without stabilisers or assistance to attend this session – it is for children who would like to improve their confidence and bike skills, perfect if they have recently learnt or are a little nervous or wobbly on the bike.
We are working in partnership with ‘Friends of Bournville Park’ who have secured funding to provide FREE summer cycling sessions. In this session children will learn the following skills: (subject to timing and current ability)
- Understanding safety and equipment including helmets
- Carry out a simple bike check
- Pedal without help and stop without help
- Steer the bike properly and make it go where you want
- Brake properly and smoothly, without skidding
- Look all around while cycling
- Control the bike with one hand
- Cycle with consideration for others including vulnerable pedestrians, dogs, etc
- React safely to emergencies and maintain control of the bike
- Participants will need their own bike and helmet to take part.
Children learn differently and some take longer than others. You may need to attend more than one session to complete all the skills mentioned above.
