Event description

Description

A free group session for the following categories of people:

- people who have not yet learned to pedal

The location will be Victoria Common, Church Road, Northfield.

All ages are welcome from the age of 4 upwards. We aim for a ratio of one instructor to three to four learners. Adults who wish to learn please click here.

On this session we will teach the following:

- understanding safety equipment and clothing including helmet

- carry out a simple bike check

- get on and off the bike without help

- pedal without help and stop without help

A £5 registration fee is required to secure your place. This is to deter no-shows. You can pay the £5 registration fee once you have finished registration by clicking on the link below the registration window. Once you have paid the £5 registration fee and turned up to your first session, then there is no need to pay a registration fee for future sessions. If you are unable to pay the registration fee online then please contact us.

Each participant will need a bike to take part in this course. We do not recommend the use of stabilisers for children as they are not the best way to help the child to learn the necessary skills. We request that children wear a helmet and strongly recommend that adults wear a helmet. This session is free of charge, but please consider making a donation to Northfield Ecocentre to support the running costs of Cycle South Brum.

Parents, siblings, spectators are welcome, all we ask is that any children attending who are not participating need to watch quietly so as not to cause a collision hazard.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit?

We normally teach people from the age of four upwards. If your child is younger than this please contact us.

How will you monitor my progress?

We are now using a learning management system called Moodle. This will enable us to monitor your progress and plan the sessions accordingly.

What are my transport/parking options?

For a map of the location please click here.

There is a free car park at the entrance to Victoria Common on Church Road. There is paid car parking at Northfield Shopping Centre. There is very limited street parking on Church Road and other side roads surrounding Victoria Common.

The following buses run nearby: 61, 63, 18, 27. Northfield train station is around ten minutes walk.

Please contact us if you need help planning a cycle route.

What can/can't I bring to the event?

You should bring a bike that is roadworthy. We will show you how to carry out a safety check as part of the tuition. We can carry out minor adjustments only.

If you wish to hire a bike from us for this session then you will be able to request it when you book. You will need to pick it up from Northfield Ecocentre by 4.15pm and return it afterwards.

Please complete a bike hire enquiry form.

We request that children wear a helmet and strongly recommend that adults wear a helmet. We will show you how to fit the helmet properly as part of the tuition. If you don't have a helmet, you can borrow one.

Do I need one-to-one cycling tuition?

In most cases, no. Most people can learn to cycle in a group session, including children as young as 4. We are planning regular group sessions and people can attend as many times as they need, subject to availability. Everyone learns at different rates, and if it takes a while to learn then this isn't a bad thing as practice makes perfect. We can offer a limited number of free one-to-one sessions for adults or children who have a specific barrier that means they need additional help, such as autism, dyspraxia, hypermobility, a disability (including learning disability), chronic illness or mobility issue. Our instructors will identify anyone in need of this type of session. Please email phil@northfieldecocentre.com if you need to talk to us about this.

Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?

email phil@northfieldecocentre.com

Is my registration/ticket transferrable?

Yes, please contact us at phil@northfieldecocentre.com if you would like to transfer your ticket to another person.

Can I update my registration information?

Yes

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, we will send you a reminder email.

Weather policy

In the event of extreme weather conditions such as heavy precipitation or dangerous surfaces, it is at the discretion of our instructors whether to proceed or to cancel.

The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?

No. Please make sure you answer questions about the name, age and ability of the attendee as fully as possible. This is to help us identify how best we can teach them. We need to know about the trainee, which isn't necessarily the same as the person completing the booking form.

These sessions are part of the Move More, Eat Well initiative. Participants are required to take part in a monitoring questionnaire. You will be asked a few questions when you register. Thank you in advance for your help.
