Course Summary:

Participants will learn about the key provisions of the UNCRC and will participate in an activity designed to increase their awareness of Articles 1-42 of the UNCRC.

The training then moves on to look at what this means to children, and adults working with children in Scotland.  The Children and Young people (Scotland) Act 2014 plays a significant role in affording children in Scotland some of the rights laid out in the UNCRC. Participants will gain an understanding of some of the changes under this act brings, such as the role of the Named Person and the GIRFEC approach. Participants will also be reminded of the Scottish Government’s commitment to children and young people prior to the 2014 Act as detailed in Children’s Charter.

Participants will be introduced to organisations and initiatives that enable children to exercise their rights such as The Children’s Parliament and The Children’s Commissioner for Scotland and Together.

Participants will be asked to think about and discuss what they do in their role that supports children and young people to exercise their rights and what they might do differently in the future.

Finally the training touches on child protection and what individuals should do to safeguard children and young people.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course the learner will be able to:

  • Outline the key provisions and list the articles of United Nations Convention on the rights of the child
  • Analyse the significance of the Children & Young People (Scotland) Act 2014
  • Discuss key elements of the national approach to support the UNCRC including GIRFEC, Wellbeing and the role of the Named Person.
