About this event

On Sunday May 10,we will head for the summit for Donards little brother .. Chimney Rock Mountain.

This hike forms part of our Bucklist Bottles Series. Check out full details ⬇️

This walk begins and ends at Bloody Bridge. We will gradually ascend along the river and climb higher until we cut off to discover the to the old funicular railway that was used to carry stone from quarry to the track.

We will walk in the footsteps of the past as we explore the track and old abandoned machinery still there from days gone by. We will then continue in ascending to the summit of Chimney Rock mountain, a mountain often overlooked by its taller Slieve Donard neighbour, but in our opinion, Chimney Rock is even more spectacular! There is a little bit of a scramble on route to the summit which is a little exposed, then we will decend down to the iconinc Mourne Wall and return through Crannoge Quarry, a large abandoned quarry with lots of visible remnants that showed it was once a bustling hub of granite mining in the heart of the Mournes. The ground along the railway line is very uneven so you need to be comfortable walkinv over rock terrain.

This route through an outdoor museum will offer a glimpse of the industrial history of the Mournes.

Start and finish: Bloody Bridge

Distance: 10km

Total Ascent: 700m

Approx Time: 5 hrs

Level: Intermediate

Terrain: rocky track, open mountain, single track, boulder field, river crossing, forest, uneven pathless terrain, short steep scramble, uneven railway line, heather
