Come join CulturEx for a fun and interactive Chinese Calligraphy Workshop at The Arc Winchester. Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, this workshop is perfect for anyone interested in learning the art of Chinese calligraphy.
Our skilled instructor Raymond Yang will guide you through the basic techniques and strokes, helping you create beautiful characters with Chinese brush and ink.

Workshop Details:
CulturEx will deliver 3 Chinese calligraphy workshops, each of them will cover the basics of Chinese calligraphy but with different themes. You can choose any of them to join or you can attend all 3. There is something new for you to explore in each workshop. Suitable for all levels.
- 1st Workshop, 2pm to 4 pm Saturday September 13, ARC Space 2 at Winchester Library
Introduction to the basics of Chinese calligraphy; tools, history, different scripts. I will guide you on how to use the tools and practice some basic Chinese words. Featured activities include 'Guess what this means', 'Write your name in Chinese', 'Design traditional Chinese round fan with your own calligraphy'.
- 2nd Workshop, 2pm to 4pm Sunday September 28, ARC Space 1 at Winchester Library
Recap of the basics of Chinese calligraphy, with a focus on introducing famous Chinese poetry from different Chinese dynasties. Featured activities include 'Pick your favourite Poet', 'Practice both reading and writing one famous line'. Some activities in 1st Workshop will be repeated.
- 3rd Workshop, 2pm to 4pm Saturday October 4, ARC Space 1 at Winchester Library
Recap of the basics of Chinese calligraphy, with a focus on introducing Chinese zodiac signs and five elements. Featured activities include 'What's my Chinese zodiac sign and element and how to read and write them', 'What is my lucky number and how to read and write it'. 'How to count in Chinese'. Some popular activities in the previous 2 workshops will be repeated.
What to Expect:
- A short introduction to the evolution of Chinese language and hand writing
- The essential tools for Chinese calligraphy (brush, ink, paper)
- Practice writing and speaking some basic Chinese words
- Learn how to write your names in Chinese
- Make your own unique Chinese bookmarks or handfans to takeaway - included in registration fee.

````What to prepare
There is nothing specific you need to prepare other than your curiousity and a readiness to get your hands dirty! As we will be using ink and water there may be spills. Best to come in suitable clothing.

Step 3: There are two types of tickets for each workshop. General full price ticket or a discounted Youth ticket (age below 16). Select the right ticket(s) and quantity.

Altenatively, you can also visit our stall which is at Winchester High Street every Thursday, Friday and some Saturdays and Sundays, where you can book tickets in person.

They are all inside The Arc Winchester Library ( Jewry Street SO23 8SB). Once you get into the building, the workshops are in Space 1 or 2, which are on the ground floor. The easiest way is to read the guidance inside or ask the reception.
Car: Please use city centre car parks or park and ride services. Bus: There is a bus stop (Tb) directly outside the venue servicing many routes. Rail: We are a short, ten-minute walk from Winchester railway station. Cycling: There are bike racks situated outside the front
Of course you can! All of our three workshops are designed carefully so that all can enjoy. The first workshop will have more of the very basics which will be covered in the other two workshops. Each will have a different theme. If you want the full experience, go for all three!
Our workshops are great opportunities for family activity. However, all workshops will involve handling brush and ink. They are suitable for children aged 6 years old and above. A parent or legal guardian is needed for anyone under 16 years old.
