Description

[UPDATE: All three dates for this event have now sold out. Please email info@sambalshiok.co.uk to be added to a waiting list for cancellations. Please specify how many tickets you are looking for, and any preferred date/time, if any.]

After last year's many sell-out events, this is our most requested to date.

Come join Mandy Yin and her Sambal Shiok team for an auspicious luxury 8-course celebration of the Chinese Year of the Dog!

For three Sundays only 18 February, 25 February and 4 March, we are taking over Darjeeling Express in Kingly Court, Carnaby in Soho. There will be two lunch sittings at either 1pm or 2pm.

Tickets are £50/person plus Eventbrite fee.

DUE TO THE SHARING NATURE OF THE DISHES, WE RECOMMEND THAT TICKETS ARE BOUGHT IN MULTIPLES OF 2.

Food symbolism goes back centuries in Chinese culture, and is taken very seriously on special occasions such as Lunar New Year. This year the first day of the festival falls on February 16. Enjoying extravagant food with family and friends is arguably the cornerstone of the occasion, along with receiving the ubiquitous red envelopes full of cash ("hong bao"). All food items have their symbolic meanings which are often derived from their Cantonese or Mandarin homonyms.

This tasting menu features several of our greatest hits plus exclusive new dishes, inspired by traditionally lavish Chinese New Year feasts in Malaysia.

MENU

Fat Choy Black Moss, Cockle

Fat choy (hair vegetable black moss): sounds like “wealth, prosperity”, as in the traditional New Year greeting "Gong hei fat choi".

Eight Treasures Soup
Crab, Dried Scallop, Chicken, Shiitake Mushroom, Wood Ear Mushroom, QQ Glass Noodle, Egg, House Master Stock
Shàn bèi (scallops): "opening of new horizons"
Mù ěr (wood ear mushroom): "longevity"
Fěn sī (glass noodle): "silver chain"

Yee Sang Prosperity Toss Salad with Pomelo, Smoked Salmon
One of the dishes most Malaysian Chinese anticipate and look forward to during Chinese New Year. It is a communal dish and lots of fun. The higher and more vigorous the toss, the better the new year!

Yòu zi (pomelo): "abundance, prosperity, having children, good health, family unity"

Crispy Squid with Salted Egg Mayo

Yam Cake, Shrimp Mushroom XO
Luó bo gāo (yam cake): "good omen"

Turmeric Whitebait, Kerabu Pickles
Yú (fish, when eaten whole): "remain or surplus, having leftovers of money, an increase in prosperity"

Our Signature King Prawn Laksa
Xiǎo xiā (prawns): "happiness and good fortune"
Zhá dòufǔ (fried tofu): "gold, hence wealth"

Kuih Rose Cookie, Rose Milk
In Malaysia during Chinese New Year, these cookies are a must to present as treats to guests when they are visiting, alongside our traditional "susu bandung" rose milk!
