Event description

Description

We are excited to have brought together a panel of local specialists to share their experiences in later life planning along with top tips on how you can best prepare and plan to navigate what could be either uncertain and unsettling situations or unknown opportunities that can often arise after retirement.

Each speaker will provide information and insight to enable attendees to make better informed choices rather than being left potentially vulnerable and at risk or unware of missed opportunities in leaving things to chance.

With the confidence of having experts on hand, you can face up to creating enjoyable experiences in later life, rather than worrying about those nagging doubts and questions that can linger unattended to.

LEGALWills, Powers of Attorney and Lifetime Planning

  • Have you correctly and specifically authorised those you trust to act on your behalf if you experienced restricted mobility or diminished capacity, say as a result of Dementia? If you have an existing Power of Attorney, is it fit for purpose?
  • Have your proposed Attorneys received specialist advice and support to ensure that they act in compliance with their onerous duties and the restrictions contained in the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Practice? Who would they turn to?
  • Have you prepared your Wills to provide your Executors, Trustees and Family with the most flexibility to fund the care of the surviving spouse? Could it be challenged after your death?
  • Have you ever wondered if “Care Home Protection Lifetime Trusts” sound too simple and too good to be true? You may well be correct, there are risks and dangers to consider as well as opportunities to explore?

Ian Macara, Partner, accredited by Solicitor for the Elderly, a Dementia Friends Champion, a full STEP member and one of 71 Court of Protection accredited Panel Deputies will set out a road map for you to ensure that your legal affairs are in the most effective order possible.

FINANCIAL - Lifetime Financial Planning and Inheritance Tax Mitigation

  • Do you know how to maximise the benefit to you from your pension?
  • Will you have enough income to meet your future needs, particularly if you incur significant care costs?
  • Will you have to draw down on your savings to fund your future and how long will they last?

Gill Lynes, Associate financial member of SOLLA (Society of Later Life Advisors) and advisor at BG Wealth Management Ltd will highlight the key aspects of strategic financial planning that can make a significant difference for you and your family into later life. She will discuss:

  • Key Myths around care funding
  • Understanding Care Options
  • Examining the role of Equity release in later life

Karen Thomas ATT, tax advisor and head of Private Client Services for MHA Carpenter Box accountants, will discuss the options available to reduce your “inheritance tax estate” in order to preserve the wealth you pass onto your family. She will discuss:

  • IHT – who will need pay this?
  • Understanding the new main residence nil-rate band
  • Reducing your inheritance tax liability

CARE - Person Centred Care Provision

  • In a crisis, who do you plan to consult for specialist advice and support at a time of urgent need?
  • Do you know the range of care options available to you or your loved one or are you being told there is only one?
  • How will you vet the different care providers to ensure they are the most appropriate for your or your loved one?
  • Are you worried you might have to sell your home to pay for care?
  • How do you know what level of charges represent good value when the purchase of care could be the second biggest expenditure during your lifetime, second only to your mortgage?
  • Are you up to date with the different benefits that some are entitled to in later life and how to secure them?
  • Would you like the peace of mind of your own independent review of your current or future care provision?

Chris Moon-Willems, the first SOLLA accredited Care Consultant in Sussex, leading Independent Care Consultant with Relative Matters Ltd and author is passionate about ensuring dignity and personal centred care provision.
