CHPR Seminar Series - Where are the men in health promotion?
Overview
Where are the men? Barriers to participation in health promotion offers in the community setting. Results from a qualitative interview study in Lower Austria
Men have lower life expectancy, engage in riskier health behaviors, and show less interest in health promotion than women, with socioeconomic factors further influencing participation. Our study explores the barriers that prevent men from engaging in community-based health promotion and identifies how best to address men to motivate their participation and sustained involvement in health promotion. Twenty-eight interviews with men aged 18–65 from various everyday settings were conducted and analyzed thematically. We identified multiple barriers related to the health promotion offers themselves, as well as personal and socio-cultural barriers.
