Professor Chris McGuigan (1958-2016) was a scientist who dedicated his life to drug discovery and was determined to nurture and grow life science and research in Wales. His sad loss is felt across the University and the wider scientific community.
The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences are proud to host the Chris McGuigan Drug Discovery Awards and Symposium in his memory and celebrate his legacy and the ground breaking achievements of others in the field of drug discovery.
The Awards
The McGuigan Outstanding PhD Thesis in Drug Discovery is an award of £1,000 given to a Cardiff University PhD graduate. The award recognises a thesis that has the potential to make a significant, original and internationally recognised impact in some aspect of drug discovery sciences. The nominees should have had a PhD awarded in the last two years (since October 2020). This year the awardee is Dr Tabitha Cunliffe, Cardiff University.
The McGuigan U35 Drug Discovery Star is an award of £4,000 to recognise an early career researcher (within five years of PhD/MD award) who has made a significant, original and internationally recognised impact in drug discovery sciences. Nominees should hold an appointment at a university at the time of nomination. This year the awardee is Dr Ashleigh Shannon, Laboratoire Architecture et Fonction des Macromolécules Biologiques (AFMB), France.
The McGuigan Award for Distinguished Work in Drug Discovery is an award of £10,000 to recognise a senior researcher (academic or industrial) who has a distinguished international reputation and proven track record of leadership in:
- initiating or progressing new scientific principles or frameworks that have transformed the process of developing human medicines, OR
- translating drug discovery toward the development of human medicines.
This year the awardee is Professor Stephan Urban, Centre for Integrative Infectious Disease Research (CIID), University Hospital Heidelberg, Germany.
