About this event
How can we mitigate the impacts of our winters getting warmer and wetter? What are the next steps for the UK to transition to clean energy, from the private sector, governments and our communities?
I am hosting a climate change town hall talk to discuss the greatest challenges of our generation, climate change, and the steps we need to take to mitigate its impact.
We are already experiencing climate change: last year was the hottest on record, and this year will probably beat it. We know the only way to stop global warming is by reducing our dependency on fossil fuels. This talk is about how we do so.
To ensure we discuss the issues that matter to you, please can I kindly ask that you email me on chris.murray.mp@parliament.uk to raise any topics or questions you would like to be discussed.
To contribute to our talk, I will be joined by a fantastic panel.
I am delighted to be joined by Sarah Boyack MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero, Energy and Just Transition, and Dr Matthew Brander, Senior Lecturer in Carbon Accounting at the University of Edinburgh.
Sarah Boyack, a Member of the Scottish Parliament first elected in 1999, and MSP for Lothian, is a passionate and impactful MSP dedicated to protecting our environment, and has led the way in Holyrood in calling for and working towards a just transition to a net zero economy.
Sarah, as Minister for Transport and Planning, introduced free bus travel for the over-60s and following her re-election in 2004, became convener of the parliament’s environment committee. In 2009, Sarah was among the MSPs who voted for the Climate Change (Scotland) Act, which committed Scotland to reach net zero emissions by 2045, and in 2021, become Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero, Energy, and Just Transition.
Dr Matthew Brander, is a Senior Lecturer in Carbon Accounting at the University of Edinburgh, and has worked since 2006 in greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting and climate change policy appraisal, in consultancy and academia. Dr Brander’s research focuses on greenhouse gas (carbon) accounting, a method used to measure how many overall emissions and greenhouse gases organisations are producing and emitting into the atmosphere.
I am also delighted to be joined by environmental groups from across Edinburgh who will be raising the work that they do in the community and following up with a question to the panel.
For the remaining half, we will be opening up our discussion to the room to take further questions from those who would like to raise their perspective to the panel.
Please do book a slot if you would like to attend. It would be helpful to hear what you would like to discuss prior to the event, so please do get in touch!
*Venue to be confirmed once slot has been confirmed.
