Event description

Description

In July this year the United Nations agreed a Treaty to ban nuclear weapons. The Treaty is a significant step towards a world free of nuclear weapons and is supported by more than 120 countries. Despite the overwhelming support of the international community, the United Kingdom has said that it will not sign the Treaty or recognise its provisions.

Civil Society played a key part in the process leading up to the Treaty being agreed and Christian CND attended many of the events where key elements were discussed. In addition, Christian CND sent two delegates to the first round of negotiations in New York earlier this year.

This conference will explore the Ban Treaty in more detail and to hear from those who attended the negotiations in New York. There will also be a chance to discuss upcoming campaigning and how best to influence those in positions of leadership to support the Ban Treaty.

The agenda for the day is as follows:

11:00 – 11:45 Registration and welcome prayer, reflection
11:45 – 12:15 Introduction to the Ban Treaty - David Cullen, Nuclear Information Service
12:15 – 12:45 The UK Government and the Ban Treaty - David Cullen, Nuclear Informarion Service
12:45 – 13:15 Lunch
13:15 – 13:45 Vatican Conference on nuclear disarmament
13:45 – 14:10 CND campaigning locally - Hannah Tweddell, Bristol CND Chair
14:10 – 14:15 Break
14:15 – 15:00 Workshops

The conference element of the day is open to all.

The Christian CND AGM will take place at 15:00. All Christian CND members are welcome to attend, but only those who have been members for more than 1 year are able to vote.
