About this event

Christina Gabbitas is an award-winning children’s author, Coronation Champion, Founder of the Children’s Literature Festivals charity, and Honorary Member of the NSPCC Council, driven by a passion for educating young people about the world around them. Since being commissioned in 2019 by various police forces to write and educate on the topic of county lines exploitation and associated knife crime through a series of stories that explore these critical issues, she has made it her mission to collaborate nationally, fostering a united front to help educate children, young people, and communities about these pressing subjects.

In March 2024, Christina launched an innovative writing initiative aimed at encouraging young people aged 12-21 to express themselves through poetry and lyrics in any style they choose. This initiative not only provides a creative outlet but also empowers youth to share their voices and perspectives on important societal issues. The judging panel for this initiative consisted Mickey Bradley of The Undertones, various ranks in policing nationally, youth workers, spoken word artists, and victims of exploitation, ensuring that the selection process was inclusive and representative of diverse experiences.

The top forty poems and lyrics from this initiative have been creatively compiled and published in a national book, which was part-funded by monies seized from criminals in North Yorkshire, alongside contributions from YMCA Lincolnshire, Dean Coady OBE, SMRC, and Christina herself, who generously volunteered her time and resources for this worthy cause.

Christina will be showcasing the poetry collection at our three-day festival, where attendees will have the opportunity to engage in conversations with her about the initiative and the importance of creative expression in addressing social issues. She will also be selling copies of the collection, with all proceeds going to NSPCC Childline, further supporting the vital work of safeguarding children and providing them with the help they need.

Through her dedication and innovative approaches, Christina Gabbitas continues to make a significant impact in the realm of children’s literature and education, inspiring the next generation to use their voices and creativity to effect positive change in their communities.

At the age of 17 Christina’s claim to fame was being part of a support band for the Chamelons at Preston Paradise Club, playing Sax and percussion!
