Christmas Tree Planting - Thursday 10th February 2022
Event Information
About this event
Come on down and help us bury those loveable firs in the dunes between the 9th and 11th February!
Why are we planting Christmas Trees?
Sand dunes on the Fylde Coast provide a unique habitat for lots of highly specialised plants and animals! We have flowers of international importance, moths and butterflies of UK conservation importance, breeding birds, amphibians and reptiles and a SSSI designation. Our sand dunes are also a really effective form of soft sea defence for the local community, which is why the Fylde Sand Dunes Project is funded by the Environment Agency to conserve and restore the dunes.
Over the last 150 years we’ve lost over 80% of the dunes on the Fylde coastline, mainly due to the expansion of the coastal towns. The main aim of the Fylde Sand Dunes Project is to grow the dunes seawards down to the high tide mark, to make the dunes a wider, more efficient form of sea defence.
Christmas trees are a fantastic practical (and free!) resource for our project. Last year we received well over 2500 trees which we recycled into the dunes. Your donated Christmas trees are partially buried in a line in front of the existing dunes, where their branches stick up slightly and trap wind-blown sand. Over time the sand accumulates around the trees and new embryo dunes start to build up! Since the project started we’ve seen up to a 80m increase in width across the St Anne’s dune system.
Please come along and help us build new dunes with recycled Christmas Trees!
If you are a large group (of more than 10) please let us know you are coming by emailing apennington@lancswt.org.uk
