Description

We are delighted to welcome Churchill alumni to our second Business Network event, 'Changing Expecations for Corporate Governance'. Our speakers will be Simon Henry (U79), former CFO of Shell and James Butler (U66), currently a non-executive Director of Zurich Assurance.

Simon Henry graduated with a BA in mathematics from Churchill College in 1982. He then joined Shell as an engineer and worked for the company for 35 years, the last 8 as an executive director and CFO. In this time he lived in four countries and held regional and global business leadership and governance roles for over 20 years. He is now a non-executive director of Lloyds Banking Group and Rio Tinto in London, an independent director of PetroChina Ltd in Beijing and has recently joined the defence board in the UK Government.

He has wide experience of the energy industry and related capital markets, with more recent experience of banking, mining and defence. He is a member of the advisory panel of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and of the advisory board of the Centre for European Reform, in addition to being a trustee of the Cambridge China Development Trust.

James is a senior non-executive Director and a Chairman in the Financial Services sector. He is an Independent Non-Executive Director of Zurich Assurance, one of the largest life assurers in the U.K. He Chairs the Audit Committee and is a member of the Risk Committee and of the Investment Committee. He has similar roles with Sterling ISA Managers which provides pension and savings products to corporate and retail customers via dealing and administration platforms which Sterling provides to Independent Financial Advisors.

He is also Chairman of Endsleigh Insurance Services which is a national, general insurance Broker distributing general insurance products particularly to students and those working within the Education sector. After graduating from Cambridge University, James qualified as a solicitor at Freshfields . After periods in Investment Banking as an advisor in Corporate Finance and as an in-house lawyer in Telecommunications as General Counsel, he was appointed Head of Legal at Lloyds of London, the international insurance market.

In recent years James has focussed on his roles as a Non-Executive Director and as Chairman. He is also a qualified business coach and coaches senior executives in business, professional services, regulatory bodies and in charities. His broad commercial experience gained from his senior executive roles in business has been particularly useful in each of these current roles.

We are grateful to Greg Lock (U66) for sponsoring this event.
