Event description

Description

Discover more about the Churnet Valley on a guided walk with local historian Byron Machin

RSPB Coombes Valley team invites visitors to join them on a guided history walk, taking in the rich heritage of the Churnet Valley. The walk will include Bellpit Meadows, acquired in 2014, thanks to Heritage Lottery Funding. They will share a unique glimpse into the history of the site, and how it got its name.

The walk will cover three miles, focusing on Bellpit Meadows, Far Kingsley, and the Cauldon Canal, exploring the remains of ancient coal and iron mines, and learning more about the wildlife in this area.

Mel Brown, from RSPB Coombes and Churnet Valley says: “This is an exciting opportunity to discover more about the Churnet Valley reserve and Bellpit Meadows. The natural and industrial heritage surrounding the Churnet is fascinating, and I can’t think of a better way to absorb the local history than on a good walk!”

The walk will be steep in places and may be muddy, so appropriate footwear is essential. All walks start at 1 pm and finish around 4 pm. Walks start from Consall Nature Park, ST9 0AF. £6 per adult, £3 per child, with 20% off for RSPB members.

Booking is essential. For more information visit our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/CoombesValley or our website: www.rspb.org.uk/coombesvalley
