About this event

  • Ages 18+

Ymunwch â Queer Hiking North Wales (grŵp cerdded LGBTQIA+ Gogledd Cymru) ar eu taith gerdded gyntaf - taith gerdded natur i gopa'r Wyddfa, yr unig gartref yn y DU i'r Chwilen Dail Enfys (Chrysolina cerealis).

Join Queer Hiking North Wales (North Wales' very own LGBTQIA+ hiking group) on their inugural hike - a nature walk to the summit of Yr Wyddfa, the only home in the UK for the Rainbow Leaf Beetle (Chrysolina cerealis).

We will meet people in the village of Llanberis at Rumdoodles Coffee shop and Becws Melyn before getting 10.00am bus up to Pen Y Pass car park from opposite Joe Browns Outdoor shop (ticket price covers bus fair). We will then walk up the PYG track to the summit of Yr Wyddfa. Along the walk we be keeping our eyes peeled for the illusive Rainbow Leaf Beetle, we will meet some of the amazing species and habitats that call the mountain their home, talk about the history, myths and legends of the mountain, and we will take time out to appreciate the wonders of the landscape around us. We will return to Llanberis via the Llanberis Path.

The terrain on Yr Wyddfa is uneven and we will be assending over 700 m in altitude with some steep sections and large rock steps. Before joining the walk all attendees will need to complete a medical disclosure form which will be sent out by email. The walk has limited availability with just 10 spaces.

This event is supported by the 'Natur am Byth!' Tlysau Mynydd Eryri Project a National Heritage Lottery funded project that aims to change the fortunes for 12 rare Alpine plant and invertebrate species that make the mountains of Eryri their home. The walk will be led by mountain leader Ailsa from Siwrnai.

Frequently asked questions

Is the walk suitable for wheelchair users or people with a mobility impairment?

The path we will be taking up Yr Wyddfa will be extremely difficult for a wheelchair user without significant adapted assistance which we are unable to offer for this walk. There are large steps and steep sections which may make the walk unsuitable for people with other mobility impairments.

Can I bring my dog?

Well behaved dogs kept on a lead will be welcome. There are fragile habitats, grazing livestock and a lot of other people and dogs around on the paths up Yr Wyddfa so dogs must be happy to be kept on a lead.

What should I wear?

You need to wear appropriate clothing for hiking. Dress in layers to accommodate changing weather. You will need a waterproof jacket, hat and gloves as it can be cold on the summit even in summer. You will also need sturdy, comfortable footwear.

What else will I need?

Lunch and a backpack to carry it, spare clothes, water, first aid kit and/or any personal items in.

What should I bring for lunch?

That's up to you but you need to ensure you have enough food to keep you going during the hike. We will be making stops for snacks and a lunch break. You will need about 2 Litres of water with you to ensure you remain hydrated.

Will I be safe? am I fit enough?

You are responsible for your own safety. You need to ensure you are fit to undertake this hike, if you have any concerns about your fitness please speak to your GP before you join us. We will have a qualified mountain leader and two qualified first aiders on the hike.

Do I need to be LGBTQIA+ to join the hike?

You don't need to be LGBTQIA+ but this hike will be a open and inclusive environment. Its an opportunity for allyship.

Will the walk be led in Welsh or English?

The walk will mostly be led in English but elements of Welsh will be used particularly place names and names of species. Both leaders use both languages.

Organized by

The high peaks of Eryri support 59 of our 152 widely recognised mountain plants, and a huge number of rare montane invertebrates as well as a wide range of other rare species from other taxonomic groups. Sadly, many of these species are severely threatened in Wales. Victorian over-collection is partly to blame, but three modern factors also pose a clear and present danger: changing land-use patterns (inappropriate grazing regimes, tree planting, recreation and tourism), increased deposition of air-borne nitrogen, and climate change. All are probably compounded by genetic ‘bottlenecking’. Through the 'Natur am Byth!' partnership the Tlysau Mynydd Eryri Project aims to change the fortunes of some of the rarest of these mountain gems with funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Welsh Government.
