Event description
Youth worker and activist Ciaran Thapar will join David Lammy MP for an urgent and moving livestreamed conversation about youth violence.

About this event

Thapar’s new book, Cut Short, paints a nuanced picture of London’s serious youth violence epidemic, getting behind the statistics to capture the identities of the people who find themselves on the frontline of violent crime. In doing so, he not only examines an urgent issue, but humanises those whose identities are often diluted by simplistic and prejudiced reporting into “knife crime”.

Thapar will be joined by Lammy, MP for Tottenham since 2000 and currently the Shadow Lord Chancellor and Shadow Secretary of State for Justice. A vocal campaigner for the prevention of youth violence throughout his career, Lammy has previously called the problem “a national scandal” and has demanded serious action from the prime minister.

Together, they will discuss the many issues that radiate around youth violence, from gentrification to the education and criminal justice systems, youth services, and public health. They will also speak to Cut Short’s celebration of music, of the power of mentoring, and of Thapar’s blueprint for actionable and positive social change. Jhemar Jonas and Demetri Addison, two young men that Ciaran has mentored and whose stories he shares in Cut Short, will also join the conversation.
