Service providers have to make "reasonable adjustments" to the physical barriers to access in all buildings. Inductive loop amplifiers need to be installed and calibrated correctly so that test certificates can be produced for Audio Frequency Induction Loop Systems (AFILS) in accordance with BS EN 60118-4. If they are not powerful enough or incorrectly set up they produce distorted sounds. Often installed systems are simply a loop behind the COP with limited range so they cannot be heard by a person at the other side of the car or collapsed on the floor. This leaves users with impaired hearing at a dangerous disadvantage as they cannot hear normal and telephone lift messages. This paper provides guidance on how existing loop amplifier specifications and installations can be improved.

As a harmonized standard it is a key document referenced in both Approved Document M and BS 8300, and has established itself as the de facto standard on the subject throughout Europe and beyond.

This year will see the publication of the first revision to Part 70 since its original publication nearly fifteen years ago. It’s the result of three years of work and much heated debate, consultation and comment. The presenter represented BSi on the standard’s European drafting committee and therefore has insight into the key changes we will see in the new document, and the thinking behind them.”
