Event description

Description

‘On 26 April 1986, the world's worst nuclear disaster unfolded in the former USSR at Chernobyl Unit 4, a name that has become synonymous with safety culture failings in the nuclear industry. 32 years on, this lecture will explore the extraordinary sequence of events that led to the dramatic destruction of a plant that was perceived to be cutting-edge at the time. The talk will include a technical overview of the progression of the accident, analysis of human and organisational aspects and also look at what's happening on the site today, with stunning pictures and first-hand experience from a recent site visit.

Presenter Tom Hughes is the Training Instructor for Horizon Nuclear Power and has responsibility for development and delivery of Horizon’s technical training programmes. Tom has varied experience in application of operating experience, nuclear new-build, training and operations. Tom is a chartered mechanical engineer whose qualifications include INPO Instructor Certification, MEng Mechanical Engineering and PgD in Nuclear Reactor Technology.’
