Sam McBride is the Political Editor of the News Letter and the Northern Ireland Political Editor for the i newspaper in London, having started his career at the Belfast Telegraph. He is also a regular broadcaster, providing analysis for local, national and international audiences. His first book, Burned: The Inside Story of the 'Cash-for-Ash' Scandal and Northern Ireland's Secretive New Elite, was published by Merrion Press in October 2018 and became a Sunday Times, Irish Times and Amazon bestseller.

Cash for ash and the emperor with no clothes: Journalism's power to expose a society's most powerful figures

What role should investigative journalism play in a divided post-conflict society? Should a small regional newspaper overwhelmingly read by one side of that society's communal divide delve into exposing some of that community's most senior politicians? And in a tribalised political landscape do the public really want to know the faults of their own leaders? Sam McBride, author of The Sunday Times' bestseller Burned: The Inside Story of the 'Cash-for-Ash' Scandal and Northern Ireland's Secretive New Elite, explores these questions and tells the story of the extraordinary response to journalism which has exposed destructive truths which have led to the collapse of Northern Ireland's entire system of government.
