Tafsir of Surah al-Baqarah (The Cow)

In the CIL 3 course we will exhaustively study the longest and most comprehensive Surah of the Holy Qur’an; Surah Al-Baqarah. We will take this as an opportunity to reflect on the meanings and gems of this Surah, whilst trying to connect, inwardly and outwardly, with the guidance of our Creator, in-order that we experience a direct relation with Him, and become fully aware of His grace and His mercy to us.

Imam Muslim narrates on the authority of Sayyidina Abu Hurayra (ra), he said that the Prophet said, “Don’t make your homes graves, verily Satan flees from a home in which Surah al-Baqarah is recited.”

This Medinan surah contains material revealed over several years, and named after the story of the cow which the Israelites were ordered by Allah to slaughter. The surah opens with a reply to the plea for guidance in Surah, ‘Al-Fatiha’, dividing mankind into three groups in their response to this guidance- the believers, the disbelievers, and the hypocrites - and closes confirming the tenets of faith given in the opening verses (3-5). The addressee moves as the surah advances: at numerous points the surah addresses mankind in general, where they are commended to serve God who has been so gracious to them (they are reminded that God created Adam and favoured him over the angels), the Children of Israel, who are reminded of God's special favours to them and urged to believe in scriptures that do indeed confirm their own, and the believers, who are given instruction in many areas — prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, defence, marital law, and financial matters.

Riyad us-Salihin

After successfully completing the study of the Forty hadith in the CIL 2 Course, we will now be studying the beautiful book on the Prophetic sayings (hadith), Riyad us-Salihin. This book -like the 40 hadith- was compiled by the great scholar of Islam, Imam Abu Zakariyya Yahya Ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (d.1277 C.E.). This is a unique and inspiring course, which will cover the first 100 chapters from this famous Hadith text. The book translates as ‘The Meadows of the Pious’, this title carefully chosen by the author, because each hadith which emanated from the blessed heart and mouth of the Holy Prophet , is the like of a beautiful garden.

The instructor will be using the modern commentary entitled ‘Nuzhatul Mutaqin (the picnic of the God-Fearing)’-compiled by various scholars from the Levant- to shed light upon the linguistic meanings of the words in the hadith, along with benefits derived from the hadith. This course will acquaint you in becoming well-versed with the teachings of the Prophet , along with shedding light on what the Prophet ordered and prohibited in-order to achieve salvation in both Worlds. Furthermore, it will acquaint you to the great benefits derived by the scholars of Islam from the Hadiths of the Prophet in a unique and inspirational manner. This will Insh’Allah help you in becoming a better individual, especially in relation your social interactions with your family and wider society
