Formed in the aftermath of rail privatisation to work at the heart of the rail operations community, the Chartered Institution of Railway Operators has been celebrating a quarter-century of enhancing the professional development of railway operators across the globe and shaping the future of rail. Learning opportunities are on offer for staff at all points in their career, from the popular Introduction to Rail course to high-level academic programmes for senior managers and leaders. CIRO’s new chief executive Philip Sherratt crossed the tracks from the editor’s chair at Modern Railways earlier this year, and will reflect for us on where the rail industry is heading and how the operations community can help it get to where it needs to be.
Phil Sherratt is CEO at the Chartered Institution of Railway Operators, the only professional body dedicated to the railway operating profession. He joined CIRO in October 2024 after 10 years at Modern Railways, latterly as Editor, leading the monthly magazine, online activity and extensive events programme. A lifelong railway enthusiast, he is passionate about emphasising the difference the railway makes to people’s lives and to our economy on a daily basis. Away from work, he is a church organist in Nottingham.
