Event description

Description

Based in Edimburgh, CinemaAttic is working towards becoming a keystone company in the distribution of Hispanic and Lusophone cinema in Scotland and UK and a platform for entertainment, learning, cultural diffusion, networking and industry development through arts and cinema. Furthermore, we offer audio-visual artists based in UK the possibility to embrace projects outside their main area of influence.

For the first time, the Instituto Cervantes in Manchester will hold one of its projects that will focus on ‘Mujeres’. F-rated programme to celebrate a new wave of female filmmakers coming from Spain, that will include the screening of 5 short films -amongst them Spanish Academy Award winner Los Desheredados by Laura Ferres- followed by a panel discussion. This panel will explore a number of practical concerns in the film industry, as well as address the broader notions of representation of women in film.

In CinemaAttic we are a bunch of optimists. We feel very partial to the positive change that is taking place in the global film industry. Long overdue, it finally seems to be entering a new phase where women are not only to become more welcome as creators, but also their input on every level of cinematic story-telling more appreciated. We couldn’t be more excited to be part of it, because in order for the female voice to be heard, there should be platforms that amplify it. So prepare for February to be loud and proud for women.

For our first event in Manchester, we’re asking ourselves and you, and everyone else – what is the female side of the story? Is there only one way to tell it? Does it only have to be entirely positive? Our rebel spirit demands to go to the margins and bring up a bunch of questions and offer a variety of options for you, because we don’t think there is just one way to express it. And so what you will see in our short film programme this month is many reflections of female gaze, and female voice, and some great female direction. It will be atmospheric, and troublesome and hopeful. It will not be entirely right or entirely wrong, like none of the human beings are. But there definitely will be increased levels of warmth and empathy. Tenderness and yet incredible strength of spirit side by side. There will be pain and there will be love, both maddening. So you are all invited to witness this beautiful rollercoaster.

Free entry.
