Event description

Description

Wednesday 12th July

14:00 to 15:00

Come along to CINE[STHESIA] - our staff-run film club showcasing hidden gems from the National Library of Scotland's Moving Image Archive.

There's always something surprising to find in the archive - it's a little known fact that not all of our footage is of Scotland.

As we reach the height of summer and our thoughts turn to travelling and exploring the world, we would like to present a selection of travelogues made by Scots throughout the decades. From Bruges in the west to Tokyo in the east, experience the delights of these cities in beautiful colour.

Film details:

Bruges (8894)

An amateur film, complete with commentary, of a family holiday to Bruges, Belgium. Exploring the architecture and waterways of the historic city, highlights of the film include a canal boat ride and shots of the Cathedral of the Holy Blood.

Ceylon Calling (0146)

A rare insight into 1930s Sri Lanka, then a part of the British Empire referred to as Ceylon. Filmed by Nettie McGavin of McGavin's Tea company, who visited the country several times on business trips. The film shows the bustling city of Colombo and colourful market stalls in Kandy, the ancient capital. Prominently featured are shots of giant Buddha carvings and ruined cities.

Japanese Journey (4118)

Featuring stunning shots of the cherry blossoms in full bloom, this 1963 film explores the fascinating contrasts of Japan. Figures in traditional dress are juxtaposed with the modern metropolis of Tokyo and its cutting-edge industries. The film shows the varied ways of life in Japan, ranging from inner city office workers to labourers cultivating tea and diving for pearl oysters.

After the screening, take some time to explore our collections in the National Library's award-winning Kelvin Hall venue.
