Join us for a specially curated selection of films from the archive which explore mental health and wellbeing.

Presented chronologically, the programme offers an eclectic mix of films which invites viewers to reflect on the changing perceptions, attitudes and conceptualisations of mental health, as portrayed on screen through the years.

The selected programme includes:

An early representation of the impact of stress and fatigue in war-time Clydeside industrial society, with a 1940s Department for Health sponsored film, It Began on the Clyde.

A melancholic portrayal of sadness and suicide in short fictional film Incubo, filmed by one of Scotland's most unusual and remarkable film makers Enrico Cocozza in 1956.

1960s interview footage with Dr Maxwell Jones, pioneer of the ‘therapeutic community’, in Dingleton Hospital Melrose.

Two documentary films (Once Bitten… and I Have a Voice) which present the personal experience of mental health problems, such as depression, PTSD, social anxiety disorder and contributing factors such as toxic masculinity.
